Hilary Thorpe

Hilary trained in textile design at West Surrey College of Art and Design, and has now been working as an artist for over 25 years. She moved to Whitby in 2014 after 30 years on the Isle of Wight.

Hilary loves to paint outdoors on location (‘plein air’), relishing all the elements of the North Yorkshire coast, capturing the activity of the sea, the ever changing colourful landscape of the moors and the scenic coastal villages … all the things that give her a buzz, and that’s what she tries to get down on paper.

Hilary works primarily in acrylics, using palette knives and brushes with a loose style. She also enjoys sketching in pen and watercolour in her home-made sketchbooks.

Hillary sells her work through galleries, exhibitions, art events and her website. She combines her work as a painter with some occasional teaching and workshops. Many of her sketches are made into prints.

Hilary also likes to travel further afield to paint and sketch and recent trips have been to the west coast of Scotland, Cornwall and Tuscany.
