June Gray
Born in Cottingham Hull, June first studied art at the High School for Art and then went on to take a fashion design and textile course at Hull College of Art.
June qualified as a teacher in the late 1960s and began working in schools in Hull, until she moved to York on the early 1980s; teaching mainly in Fulford and Oakland Comprehensives she taught subject related to art and textiles to GCSE level, and ran popular and successful adult education courses in watercolour painting, pastels in abstract calligraphy, fashion design and dressmaking.
As a member of the York Scribes, June used to practice her calligraphy skills through voluntary work in York Minster on the “Minutes of history desk”, where for a small donation personal hand written commemorative or dedication certificates could be obtained.
June has exhibited her work in many venues in and around York over the years, including exhibitions with the Ryedale and York art societies. And she has continued to study and be influenced by a variety of artists, particularly developing her abstract skills. Her work mainly focuses on the Yorkshire Wolds landscapes and coastal scenes.
